Map of GrenadaGrenada & the Grenadines

Under the Associated Statehood Act of 1967, Grenada was granted full autonomy over its internal affairs in March 1967. Full independence was granted on February 7, 1974.

Hurricane Ivan ripped through the Caribbean September 2004 with a destructive force unseen in the region in the last ten years. Dubbed “Ivan the Terrible” the hurricane wreaked havoc on the tiny island of Grenada, with 90 per cent of its housing stock being destroyed, leaving 60,000 homeless. Grenada's education system is now in severe crisis. Most schools were severely damaged or destroyed!

The Global Literacy Project has joined with many other concerned groups to make a difference in the rebuilding of Grenada. We are working with the Florida based, Boaters for Books (www.boatersforbooks.org) to deliver general reading, academic and reference texts to all schools in Grenada that request assistance from us. We are excited to work with Boaters for Books. Among the islands that have been served by Boaters for Books are Anguilla, Nevis, Montserrat, Dominica, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and the islands of the Bahamas.  Boaters for Books has volunteers on the ground in each of these locations.
